A British School for Children in the Centre of Madrid
Numont British Primary School in Madrid was founded in 1962 by Margaret Ann Swanson, whose vision was to provide good, sound British Education for children of all nationalities. Mrs Swanson believed that learning in a multi-cultural setting provides children with a rich and stimulating environment, which leads to tolerance and understanding. As the first British School in Madrid we keep such vision for our children´s education.
Numont has occupied its present location in C/Parma since 1969. It has grown in size since its early days but it still retains a sense of familiarity that has enabled it to remain a friendly environment which offers a broad and varied curriculum. In our premises, we have children from Nursery to Year 6 (2 to 12 years old). However, after Numont School there is a variety of other British Schools that our children attend from Year 7. We have an agreement with International School of Madrid, where our children are guaranteed a place in Secondary, as from Year 7.
In the Nursery and Reception classes our children are introduced to a stimulating school life where enjoyment is the main ingredient in a programme that initially teaches through play. The school day offers children a range of practical and creative activities and develops oral, literacy and numeracy skills as well as placing emphasis on independence and social interaction.
Primary education is a critical stage in children’s development – it shapes them for life as well as giving them the essential tools for learning. Primary education is about children experiencing the joy of discovery, solving problems, being creative, developing their self-confidence as learners and maturing socially and emotionally.
The Primary curriculum emphasises the importance of developing the depth of children’s learning. In essence, this means providing children with increased cognitive challenges and allowing them to apply the skills they have learnt independently, in a range of contexts, rather than moving them onto the next skill needlessly when they have not truly mastered it.
