Do you know that there´s a real time interactive map that will show you how clean the air in Madrid is, right now?
It´s called the European Air Quality Index and you can get all of the info about current air pollution at http://airindex.eea.europa.eu/
Right now, the air quality is listed as “Good”.
But 53 of the last 100 days have been reported as only “Fair” or “Moderate”.
At the end of 2018, Madrid’s mayor Manuela Carmena, stated that 472 hectares within the city centre is off-limits to cars not belonging to residents or public transportation.
Other vehicles can enter the area if they carry an environmental label and are left in a public parking lot.
It´s all part of an initiative called “The Air Quality project” which plans to reduce the number of older car models in the city centre, and the project is backed by the European Commission. The objective is to reduce pollution by 40%, the limit set by the Commission’s Air Quality Directive.
If you´re still not sure about your own car, just enter your car registration here: http://www.dgt.es/es/seguridad-vial/distintivo-ambiental/index.shtml
